de meest voorkomende vorm van kanker bij vrouwen in Nederland. Ongeveer één op de zeven vrouwen krijgt er in haar leven mee te maken. Ook mannen kunnen borstkanker krijgen, al komt dat veel minder vaak voor.
Borstkanker ontstaat wanneer cellen in het borstweefsel zich ongecontroleerd gaan delen en een kwaadaardige tumor vormen. Vaak gebeurt dat in de melkklieren of melkgangen (ductaal carcinoom). Een andere naam voor borstkanker is mammacarcinoom.
De meeste vormen van borstkanker ontwikkelen zich langzaam. Dat geeft vaak tijd om goed na te denken over de behandeling die het beste bij jou past.
